Stones from Staffordshire pave the way to better education in Zambia

3 November 2008, Staffordshire, UK - Stone Group, a leading IT provider and the UK’s second largest original equipment manufacturer, has today announced that it has donated new laptop computers to the Mwandi United Church of Zambia, a charity that provides aid to Mwandi, a small village in the Zambian republic. The donated Stonebook computers will be used by teachers in the village school to provide pupils with access to the rich learning and knowledge resources available on-line.

Mwandi has a population of approximately 7,000 people. Sixty percent of the adult population suffer from HIV, and many of the children are orphans. The Mwandi United Church of Zambia was established in 2004 to help assist the village’s orphans and vulnerable children. It currently manages three projects, centering on schooling, supporting the local hospital and building accommodation for the elderly.

Commenting on the donation to the charity, James Bird CEO, of Staffordshire-based Stone Group said: “For a developing region to succeed, access to education and knowledge is critical. This is particularly true in places where disease is rife, and knowledge and information about preventing disease is limited. Donating laptop computers to Mwandi’s school will not only enrich the pupils’ learning experience, but will also provide access to information that will help them build a better tomorrow for the village, and its people.”
